Dua When Entering the Graveyard

Sahih Muslim 975

This dua is recited when first entering the graveyard, offering peace upon those buried and a reminder of our own mortality.

ARABIC

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ دَارَ قَوْمٍ مُؤْمِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ بِكُمْ لاَحِقُونَ، أَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ لَنَا وَلَكُمُ الْعَافِيَةَ

Transliteration

As-salāmu ʿalaykum dāra qawmin muʾminīn wa innā in shāʾa Allāhu bikum lāḥiqūn, asʾalu Allāha lanā wa lakumu al-ʿāfiyah.

TRANSLATION

Peace be upon you, O abode of believing people, and indeed we, if Allah wills, will join you. I ask Allah for well-being for us and for you.

Dua for Forgiveness for the Deceased

Sahih Muslim 963

This dua asks Allah to forgive the deceased and elevate their ranks, as the Prophet (ﷺ) often prayed for the departed.

ARABIC

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ، وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ، وَأَكْرِمْ نُزُلَهُ، وَوَسِّعْ مُدْخَلَهُ، وَاغْسِلْهُ بِالْمَاءِ وَالثَّلْجِ وَالْبَرَدِ

Transliteration

Allāhumma ighfir lahu warḥamhu, wa ʿāfihi waʿfu ʿanhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassīʿ mudkhalahu, waghsilhu bialmāʾi walththalji waalbaradi.

TRANSLATION

O Allah, forgive him and have mercy upon him, pardon him and grant him security, honor the place where he settles and make his entrance spacious; cleanse him with water, snow, and ice.

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ

Transliteration

Allāhumma ighfir lil-muʾminīna wa-l-muʾmināt.

TRANSLATION

O Allah, forgive the believing men and believing women.

Dua for Mercy for the Deceased

Sunan Ibn Majah 1498

Recite this dua to ask Allah for a good end, forgiveness, and mercy for the deceased and for oneself.

ARABIC

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِحَيِّنَا وَمَيِّتِنَا وَشَاهِدِنَا وَغَائِبِنَا وَصَغِيرِنَا وَكَبِيرِنَا وَذَكَرِنَا وَأُنْثَانَا اللَّهُمَّ مَنْ أَحْيَيْتَهُ مِنَّا فَأَحْيِهِ عَلَى الإِسْلاَمِ وَمَنْ تَوَفَّيْتَهُ مِنَّا فَتَوَفَّهُ عَلَى الإِيمَانِ اللَّهُمَّ لاَ تَحْرِمْنَا أَجْرَهُ وَلاَ تُضِلَّنَا بَعْدَهُ

Transliteration

Allahummaghfir lihayyina wa mayyitina, wa shahidina wa gha’ibina, wa saghirina wa kabirina, wa dhakarina wa unthana. Allahumma man ahyaitahu minna fa'ahyihi ‘alal-Islam, wa man tawaffaytahu minna fa tawaffahu ‘alal- iman. Allahumma la tahrimna ajrahu wa la tudillana ba’dah.

TRANSLATION

O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those who are present and those who are absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whomever of us You cause to live, let him live in Islam, and whomever of us You cause to die, let him die in (a state of) faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward, and do not let us go astray after him.
