Dua to Recite When Breaking the Fast

Sunan Abi Dawud 2357

This is the well-known dua that the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) would say at iftar.

ARABIC

ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الْأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ

Transliteration

Dhahaba adh-dhama’u wabtallatil-‘urooqu wa thabatal-ajru in shaa’ Allah.

TRANSLATION

The thirst is gone, the veins are moistened and the reward is certain, if Allah wills.

Sunan Abi Dawud 2358

Another authentic supplication the Prophet (ﷺ) would say when breaking the fast.

ARABIC

اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ صُمْتُ وَعَلَى رِزْقِكَ أَفْطَرْتُ

Transliteration

Allahumma laka sumtu wa ‘ala rizqika-aftartu.

TRANSLATION

O Allah! For You I have fasted and with Your provision I break my fast.

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:127)

This is a general dua for acceptance, appropriate to recite at iftar or after any good deed.

ARABIC

رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا إِنَّكَ أَنتَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ

Transliteration

Rabbana taqabbal minna innaka Antas-Sami’ul-‘Aleem.

TRANSLATION

Our Lord, accept from us. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

Sahih Muslim 2697

It is encouraged to ask for forgiveness when breaking the fast, as this dua expresses humility and hope.

ARABIC

رَبِّي اغْفِرْ لِي وَارْحَمْنِي وَاهْدِنِي وَارْزُقْنِي

Transliteration

Rabbi ighfir li warhamni wahdini warzuqni.

TRANSLATION

My Lord, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, and provide for me.
