The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) taught us special duas to recite when visiting graves, seeking mercy for the deceased and reflecting on our own journey. These prayers bring comfort and blessings to both the living and those who have passed away.

Dua When Entering the Cemetery

Recite this dua on entering a cemetery, praying for peace and forgiveness for its inhabitants.

ARABIC

السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ الدِّيَارِ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُسْلِمِينَ، وَإِنَّا إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ بِكُمْ لاحِقُونَ، يَرْحَمُ اللَّهُ الْمُسْتَقْدِمِينَ مِنَّا وَالْمُسْتَأْخِرِينَ، أَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ لَنَا وَلَكُمُ الْعَافِيَةَ.

Transliteration

As-salāmu ‘alaykum ahla-d-diyāri min al-mu’minīna wal-muslimīn, wa innā inshā’ Allāhu bikum lāḥiqūn, yarḥamullāhul-mustaqdimīna minnā wal-musta’khirīn, as’alu Allāha lanā wa lakumul-‘āfiyah.

TRANSLATION

Peace be upon you, O dwellers of these abodes from among the believers and the Muslims. Indeed, we shall, if Allah wills, join you. May Allah have mercy on the first of us and the last of us. I ask Allah for well-being for us and for you.

Dua for the Believers in Graves

A dua taught by the Prophet ﷺ to ask forgiveness and mercy for all Muslims who have passed away.

ARABIC

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِحَيِّنَا وَمَيِّتِنَا، وَشَاهِدِنَا وَغَائِبِنَا، وَصَغِيرِنَا وَكَبِيرِنَا، وَذَكَرِنَا وَأُنْثَانَا، اللَّهُمَّ مَنْ أَحْيَيْتَهُ مِنَّا فَأَحْيِهِ عَلَى الإِسْلاَمِ، وَمَنْ تَوَفَّيْتَهُ مِنَّا فَتَوَفَّهُ عَلَى الإِيمَانِ.

Transliteration

Allāhumma’ghfir liḥayyinā wa mayyitinā, wa shāhidinā wa ghā’ibinā, wa ṣaghīrinā wa kabīrinā, wa dhakarinā wa unthānā. Allāhumma man aḥyaitahu minnā fa-aḥyihi ‘alal-Islām, wa man tawaffaytahu minnā fatawaffahu ‘alal-īmān.

TRANSLATION

O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those present and those absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whomever You keep alive from among us, keep him alive upon Islam, and whomever You cause to die from among us, cause him to die upon faith.

Dua for Mercy Upon the Deceased

A general supplication asking Allah to grant mercy and forgiveness to those in the graves.

ARABIC

رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لَنَا وَلِإِخْوَانِنَا الَّذِينَ سَبَقُونَا بِالْإِيمَانِ، وَلَا تَجْعَلْ فِي قُلُوبِنَا غِلًّا لِّلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا، رَبَّنَا إِنَّكَ رَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Transliteration

Rabbanā-ghfir lanā wa li-ikhwāninā alladhīna sabaqūnā bil-īmān, wa lā taj‘al fī qulūbinā ghillan lil-ladhīna āmanū, rabbanā innaka ra’ūfun raḥīm.

TRANSLATION

Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith, and do not place in our hearts any rancor towards those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are full of kindness and mercy.

Dua for Steadfastness for the Deceased

Sunan Abi Dawud 3221

Ask Allah to keep the deceased firm and steadfast after being questioned in the grave.

ARABIC

اللَّهُمَّ ثَبِّتْهُ عِنْدَ السُّؤَالِ

Transliteration

Allāhumma thabbit’hu ‘inda as-su’āl.

TRANSLATION

O Allah, make him steadfast when he is questioned.
