Visiting graves reminds us of the Hereafter and offers an opportunity to pray for the deceased. The Prophet ﷺ taught specific duas to recite when visiting graveyards, seeking mercy for those who have passed and reflecting on our own return to Allah.

Dua When Entering the Graveyard

Recite this dua upon entering the cemetery to greet its residents and pray for their peace and forgiveness.

ARABIC

ٱلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ ٱلدِّيَارِ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ، وَإِنَّا إِن شَاءَ ٱللّٰهُ بِكُمْ لَاحِقُونَ، نَسْأَلُ ٱللّٰهَ لَنَا وَلَكُمُ ٱلْعَافِيَةَ

Transliteration

As-salāmu ʿalaykum ahla ad-diyāri mina al-mu’minīna wa-l-muslimīn, wa innā in shā’a Allāhu bikum lāḥiqūna, nas’alu Allāha lanā wa lakumu al-ʿāfiyah.

TRANSLATION

Peace be upon you, O inhabitants of the dwellings, among the believers and Muslims. Indeed, we will, if Allah wills, be joining you. We ask Allah for well-being for us and for you.

Dua Asking Forgiveness for the Deceased

This supplication seeks forgiveness for those buried in the cemetery.

ARABIC

ٱللَّهُمَّ ٱغْفِرْ لَهُمْ وَٱرْحَمْهُمْ وَعَافِهِمْ وَٱعْفُ عَنْهُمْ

Transliteration

Allāhumma ighfir lahum warḥamhum wa ʿāfihim waʿfu ʿanhum.

TRANSLATION

O Allah, forgive them, have mercy on them, grant them peace, and pardon them.

Dua for Good Ending and Mercy

Sunan Ibn Majah 1498

Recite this dua to ask Allah for a good end, forgiveness, and mercy for the deceased and for oneself.

ARABIC

ٱللَّهُمَّ لَا تَحْرِمْنَا أَجْرَهُ وَلَا تَفْتِنَّا بَعْدَهُ وَٱغْفِرْ لَنَا وَلَهُ

Transliteration

Allāhumma lā taḥrimnā ajrahū wa lā taftinā baʿdahū waghfir lanā walahu.

TRANSLATION

O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not let us go astray after him, and forgive both us and him.

ٱللَّهُمَّ ٱغْفِرْ لِحَيِّنَا وَمَيِّتِنَا وَشَاهِدِنَا وَغَائِبِنَا وَصَغِيرِنَا وَكَبِيرِنَا وَذَكَرِنَا وَأُنثَانَا

Transliteration

Allāhumma ighfir liḥayyinā wa mayyitinā wa shāhidinā wa ghā’ibinā wa ṣaghīrinā wa kabīrinā wa dhakarinā wa unthānā.

TRANSLATION

O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those present and those absent, our young and our old, our males and our females.
