Recite this dua when you feel overwhelmed by your sins and seek forgiveness, just as Prophet Yunus did in the belly of the whale.

ARABIC

لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

Transliteration

Lā ilāha illā anta subḥānaka innī kuntu minaẓ-ẓālimīn.

TRANSLATION

There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.

Dua for Forgiveness and Mercy

Sunan Abu Dawud 1516

Use this dua to ask Allah for forgiveness and mercy, expressing regret for sins and seeking His pardon.

ARABIC

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَارْحَمْنِي وَتُبْ عَلَيَّ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ

Transliteration

Rabbi ighfir lī warḥamnī watub ‘alayya innaka anta at-Tawwāb ur-Raḥīm.

TRANSLATION

My Lord, forgive me and have mercy on me and accept my repentance. Indeed, You are the Most-Relenting, Most-Merciful.

General Dua for Seeking Forgiveness

This is the Prophet’s recommended way to ask Allah for forgiveness many times every day.

ARABIC

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ

Transliteration

Astaghfirullāh.

TRANSLATION

I seek forgiveness from Allah.

Dua for Thorough Repentance (Sayyidul Istighfar)

Regarded as the most superior way of seeking forgiveness, recite this dua with sincerity to ask Allah for complete pardon.

ARABIC

اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي لا إِلَهَ إِلا أَنْتَ، خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ، وَأَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ، أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ، أَبُوءُ لَكَ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ، وَأَبُوءُ بِذَنْبِي، فَاغْفِرْ لِي، فَإِنَّهُ لا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلا أَنْتَ

Transliteration

Allāhumma anta rabbī, lā ilāha illā anta, khalaqtanī wa-ana ‘abduka, wa-ana ‘alā ‘ahdika wa-wa‘dika ma istaṭa‘tu, a‘ūdhu bika min sharri mā ṣana‘tu, abū’u laka bini‘matika ‘alayya, wa-abū’u bidhanbī, faghfir lī, fa-innahū lā yaghfiru dh-dhunūba illā anta.

TRANSLATION

O Allah, You are my Lord. None has the right to be worshipped but You. You created me and I am Your servant, and I abide to Your covenant and promise as best as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favor upon me and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me, for verily none forgives sins except You.
