Dua for Thunder

Thunder is a sign of Allah’s power and majesty. Islam teaches us special supplications when we hear thunder, helping us remember Allah’s greatness and seek His protection. These duas provide comfort and faith during moments of awe or fear caused by thunder.

Dua when hearing thunder

Whenever Abdullah bin Zubair (RA) would hear thunder, he would abandon all conversation and say this supplication.

ARABIC

سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي يُسَبِّحُ الرَّعْدُ بِحَمْدِهِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ مِنْ خِيفَتِهِ

Transliteration

Subḥāna alladhī yusabbiḥu ar-ra‘du bi-ḥamdihī wal-malā’ikatu min khīfatihī

TRANSLATION

Glory is to Him Whom thunder and angels glorify due to fear of Him.

Dua to seek protection during storms

Surah Al-Falaq (113:1-2)

ARABIC

قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ • مِن شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

Transliteration

Qul a‘ūdhu birabbi-l-falaq • Min sharri mā khalaq

TRANSLATION

Say: I seek refuge with (Allah), the Lord of daybreak, from the evil of what He has created.

Dua for protection from all types of harm

Sunan Abi Dawood 5088

This supplication is recommended in the morning and evening and is beneficial during times of fear such as thunder.

ARABIC

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الَّذِي لَا يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ

Transliteration

Bismillāhilladhī lā yaḍurru ma‘a ismihi shay’un fī al-arḍi wa-lā fī as-samā’i wa huwa as-samī‘u al-‘alīm

TRANSLATION

In the Name of Allah with Whose Name nothing is harmed on earth nor in the heavens and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

Dua for safety and security from fear

Sunan An-Nasa’i 5533

This dua was taught by the Prophet (ﷺ) for seeking protection from all kinds of calamities, including the fear thunder brings.

ARABIC

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَدْمِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ التَّرَدِّي وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْغَرَقِ وَالْحَرِيقِ وَالْهَرَمِ

Transliteration

Allāhumma innī a‘ūdhu bika mina al-hadmi wa a‘ūdhu bika mina at-taraddī wa a‘ūdhu bika mina al-gharaq wa al-ḥarīq wa al-haram

TRANSLATION

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from destruction, from falling, from drowning, from burning, and from senility.
